About

Profile

My work has taken readers into the world of disappearing camel populations in India, India’s fossil riches, the nostalgia-soaked Instagram videos of sister duo Zainab and Sakina Sabunwala and into the rich heritage of Kantha embroidery.

I am an independent journalist based in Chennai, India. In another lifetime I worked as a company secretary dabbling in company law, and as a Japanese language interpreter and teacher.

I write on travel, gender, development, conservation, environment, pop culture, food , art and architecture and have been published in leading national/ international newspapers/ magazines like the New Indian Express, The Hindu, The Deccan Herald,The Tribune, Outlook Traveler, The Telegraph India, Livemint Lounge. as well as The Khaleej Times (Dubai), the National (UAE), The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Whetstone, BBC culture, BBC travel , BBC Future, Atlas Obscura, Christian Science Monitor, the South China Morning Post HK, Destinasian, Vacations and Travel (Australia) Conde Nast Traveler, Travel and Leisure, National Geographic Traveler, in flight magazines like Silver Kris, Going places( Malaysian), Air India in flight and Indigo in flight.

My life changing trip was in 2001 when I travelled through Japan on a Japan Foundation Scholarship. Since then I have had a cooking lesson in a medieval kitchen in Avignon; flown over the Victoria Falls in a micro light, snowmobiled in Lapland, walked with the lions in Zimbabwe and floated on the Dead Sea in my search for a good travel tale.

I am also an amateur artist who sketches and paints en plein air as well as from travel photos. I do yoga and Zumba to stay active, love gardening, cooking and interior décor, am part of a book club and a mother of two grown up adults! I believe in serendipity, the power of a hug and in finding beauty everywhere.
